Frequently Asked Questions
Rainy Day Activities on the Outer Banks!
Come see what we have to offer to make your rainy day at the beach a sunny afternoon!
What is the age limit?
There is no age limit. We welcome kids of all ages, especially adults who are kids at heart! Lots of parents like to capture their children's and infant's prints on pottery. These make great gifts for family and friends. We do ask that all children under the age of 12 be supervised. Paints are non-toxic, safe for painting on skin and easy to wash off!
I don't have any artistic ability, will I have fun at your Studio?
We have helpful staff to assist you every step of the way and lots of tools such as stencils to trace and books and samples to look at.
What does it cost to make something at Studio 12?
Our prices are all inclusive, this means that the prices marked on the mosaic or pottery include the cost of all materials, studio time and kiln firing. Prices vary depending on the size of the piece. There are a lot of projects to choose from in the $18.00 to $40.00 price range.
How long does it take to do a project at Studio 12?
We find that the average person spends about an hour and a half either doing a mosaic or painting pottery. Our prices include 2 hours of studio time. But do not worry, if you need more time, you are welcome to get a take home kit, complete with brushes and colors so you can paint anywhere!
Do we need reservations?
If you have a group of 12 or more then we do recommend reservations. We take reservations for mornings only between 9am and 10:30 am.
Is the finished pottery on display for sale?
YES! Please visit our Online store and shop from our full catalog of art work by Carolyn and Gary Schena, including wheel thrown pottery, jewelry, Christmas ornaments and more!
Can I take my pottery home the same day?
Mosaics can be taken home the same day. Pottery and glass projects must be fired in the kiln. This process takes about three days during the summer season and maybe more during the off season. During the busy summer season pottery painted by Wednesday can be picked up by Friday. We have something for everyone especially when you find yourself searching for a rainy activity at the beach!
What if I am leaving town before my pottery is done with firing?
We are happy to ship via priority mail. The shipping prices depends on the cost of the pottery and does include insurance.
Are the dishes safe to eat from?
After the pieces have been fired they are completely safe to eat from. The glazes are non-toxic.
Are the dishes microwave and dishwasher safe?
We recommend hand washing and not using the microwave. Microwaves heat very fast which causes expansion, then the pottery cools fast and this can eventually cause tiny cracks in the glazes.
